Just the truth about turkey...

1.the invasion to the byzantine empire and the fall of constantinople
2.the dark years under the ottoman rule
3.the greek revolution of 1821 and the struggle of all the nations of the balkans against the turks
4.the balkan wars and the freedom that followed
5.the disaster in asia minor and the genocide against armenians and the greeks of pontos
6.the invasion of turkey against cyprus
7.the ethnic cleansing against the kurds.

and a detail: turkey never took part in the World War 2, the other nations paid in blood for freedom, the turks joined with the allies one day before the end of the war.

I don't remember much details, but I guess you don't want to hear about them.
Seltzouk Turks first came(a turkish tribe named by their leader?) and they start pushing and pushing the Eastern Roman Empire and after several victories they settled in the south eastern part of todays Turkey. The crusade then helped,by the occupation of the Constantinople and the Ottoman Turks(named again by their leader?) started to expand westwards, conquering the rest of minor Asia,Greece and finally Constantinole.
We've learned about some atrocities took place during the occupation, regarding the Turks will to force christian people to alter their belief(many saints of orthodox church lived in the middle age and became saints because Turks kiiled them for not altering their belief). We've also learned about genishars.Turks were taking young christian kids and rase them as muslims, educate them and train them,in order to become faithfull turkish soldiers. In fact the elit of the Turkish army were the welltrained and faithfull genishars.
We have also learned that many Turkish sultans did good to their empire, incuding Greece by some some innovative changes in the structure and the organisation of it and also in a strange way, some of them helped the monasteries to grow.
Ofcourse the struggle of independance and our victories, like burning the flafship of the turkish fleet, with 2000 men in it,after they masacred Chios and Psara, are cosidered as brave acts but it depends from which side you are looking it.From the side of the people fighting for freedom,I suppose it is a brave act indeed.
Now,about Cyprus we know that bad things were happening between turkish and greek peole there after they chase out the british troops, even between greek people, but we also learned that invading a country is a bad thing to do no matter the reason.
The general idea we have is that what is past is past,we must be aware of it,not because we need reasons to hate you but in order to learn from our mistakes and try not to repeat them.We also get the impression that your goverment and the army get quite stubborn in some matters which are understood to the rest of the world.
I hope I helped a little bit.

Scepticus has a great, brief account and a greater conclusion. If we could be optimistic we cannot have the past define us in perpetuity. It is to the advantage of both Greece and Turkey to cooperate and turn the Aegean basin into the most desirable travel destination. Let's learn from the mistakes of our forefathers and let us pledge NOT to repeat them.
