Hybrid merely means "combining two sources of power". For example, what we think of as "Diesel Trains" are hybrid, there is a diesel engine driving a generator that in turn powers an electric motor to make the train move. Did you ever own a moped as a kid? Same thing, pedal and motor power, an early hybrid vehicle.
Yes, there are several types. There is the electric type that has a limited range, and you plug it in at night to go the next day. There is the type that is self contained, gasoline engine powers the generator that keeps the battery up, just to mention a few types.
Then there are the two types of hydrogen powered vehicles, fuel cell type and the ones that burn hydrogen as fuel, both of which are pretty much experimental at this point, and cost more to operate. Along with this are the "Alternate fuel vehicles" which are not hybrid, but use ethanol or propane or natural gas to power a standard cleaner burning engine.

Basically a hybrid car utilizes two different types of engines. It can be any combination, gas/electric, diesel/electric and so on. There is a possibility for more than one type, but for now the commercial auto market primarily relies on a gas/electric format. Analysts believe that we are a few years away from a diesel/electric format.

an electric powered plug-in automobile would be charged by ability of plugging it in. so as that kind of motor vehicle is almost a chargeable battery. an electric powered automobile makes use of a non-rechargeable battery so the battery can only be used as quickly as yet has a lots longer charge. A hybrid makes use of two categories of gasoline on an identical time, like gasoline and electric powered
