Alrights, i'm taking the Earth Science Regents soon.. being htat im in 8th grade. My teacher gave us a packet to do over the vacation, and i was wondering about a particular quesiton. It states a student calculates the densities of five different pieces of aluminum, each having a different voulme. Which graph best represents this relationship? (1) is as volume increases, density stays the same. (2) As volume increases density decreases. (3) As volume increases density increases. (4) As volume stays the same density increases.

I know its definitely not 4. But i have this feeling it's 1, but could be 2. I know that Finding density is M/V. But If they are 5 different pieces of aluminum, each having a different volume are they going to have the same density? It doesn't state if the temperature is the same and it doesn't state what the masses are for each. I'm really thinking it's 1. Can someone help?

Yes, it's 1.

Would you expect a small piece of aluminum to weigh less than a large piece of aluminum? The mass will scale with the volume.

But you bring up a good point with the temperature. Materials tend to expand (get larger in volume) as temperature increases, so the density actually decreases. Put that in your answer and you'll probably impress your teacher.
