AMD Athlon 64 X2. FX is single core. I've always preferred AMD in the past but when it comes to dual core, the Core 2 Duo outperforms the Athlon 64 X2 in every category.

AMD Athlon FX series . Although I hear intel core 2 duo processors are better for gaming and intense processes due to their higher cache, AMD's dual processors tend to be somewhat cheaper. I recently built my own comp using a Windsor AMD Athlon X2 5200+ and that thing soars. If you want to save money, I'd say go with AMD AthlonX2. I have always had a soft spot for intel though :D

I guess I would have to say the FX-70 series, socket 1207, It's brand new but it is said to beat the Core2Duo, but I haven't seen any benchmarks as of yet.
