The saying goes:

Cricket is a game for gentlemen played by gentlemen
Rugby is a game for gentlemen played by hooligans
Football is a game for hooligans played by hooligans

That aside, Rugby is a complete contact sport of hugely physical proportions, often players are seen coming off the park to receive medical attention (including stitches) before re-entering the game, that’s why we have blood replacements, and despite this players can leave the physical aspect of the game on the field, a footballer receiving even a minor injury is out of action for weeks, and squirming in a bout of charades where no injury exists. The game is as about gaining ground, position and tactical advantage as it is about scoring tries and goals.

Rugby is a gladiatorial contest to which, for sportsmanship, guts and sheer determination football cannot compare.

However Football does serve a noble cause….. It keeps the bad elements of society away from Gods game.

.......... Why are there so many football supporters answering questions in the Rugby section? are you the ones making silly predictions about the outcome of the 6 nations and the World Cup?

If by football you mean soccer (I'm American) you gotta be kidding. I hate soccer. I do not doubt the skill level required or the athleticism of the players or anything of that nature, but it is simply not physical enough. To me it is in the same category as golf or pool as a sport. It's cool I guess, but I am not all that impressed.

Now rugby what a sport. Kicking, runnining, tackling, getting tackled, fighting, scoring, etc. everybody does all kinds of things with both their hands and feet. Plus you gotta be pretty tough and pretty fast. Thats a man's game.

Now football as American Football - I like that too but not as much as rugby. there are a lot of the same aspects that there are in rugby (since football came from rugby) but each position is specific and players only know what pertains to their position.

Rugby wins - no question

1)Rugby Union 2)Rugby league 3) Football(soccer)
When I was young football was a contact sport. You only have to touch a player now and you're penalised.Do it twice..yellow card..three times..off.Many cheaters dive to gain an unfair advantage. This is a new phenomenon it didn't happen a few years back.Rugby is a real contact sport with skill too.
Football (premiership) are vastly overpaid prima donnas.
£100,000 A WEEK. There is something wrong with a society that pays people more in a WEEK to kick a ball about than a doctor gets in a year, or a teacher in three years,or a nurse in five years.

rugby came from football, because a kid didn't have the skill to kick a ball so he picked it up a ran with it. (thats true)

Football is the greatest game.
if you have a ball you can have a game everywhere. coats on a carpark, game on
Rugby - well if you want to play it anywhere but a rugby field you have to change the rules or start playing a touch version of american football
Its true rugby is a thugs game played by gentlemen and football a gentlemans game played by thugs, football could learn a few things from the respect rugby players show to refs etc. but the simplicity of football makes it stand out above any other sport

Rugby is the supreme sport-though Gaelic foot ball and Aussie Rules are close

Peter H is talking claptrap as Rugby goes back to the 11th. century with the inter village games still commemorated today

The reason for popularity in schools was that you could get 30 on a field as opposed to 22
Also every body had a role to play:heavy or light, tall or small, ball skills or not

If you have a chance, watch Super 14,this is a different world!!

Rugby!!!!
Football is a gay game played by over paid Neanderthals who eat jelly and ice cream for lunch.

Rugby is a game where you can have a fight on the pitch then have a drink with your opposite number discussing how rubbish your punch was. In football the violence from the pitch will continue until the very next season.
