My fish (a betta) does not have ich. I have seen ich before. This is a SINGLE GRAY dot (size of the tip of a lead pencil) clinging to the edge of one of his fins. He eats, swims and acts normally. I noticed this dot about a week ago. It hasn't fallen off, so I'm getting worried. Since he's acting totally normal, I hate to treat the water with harsh chemicals. I do weekly water changes and he is in a tank all alone. What is this thing?

It could be any number of things but the most likely answer is a slight fin damage or even old age starting to affect his color. Watch him carefully for other spots or for any change in that spot that might indicate it's something else. If you see a change post another question and hopefully someone can help you or drop me a line.
