My young friend, you have brought up an excellent point -- if you take the whole "freedom is not free" aspect out of your argument, you still make a good case for able-bodied American citizens being required to serve in the Armed Forces. As you alluded to, a person learns a wide array of valuable life skills by serving in the military -- like learning CPR, purifying stream water, being able to start a fire, alternate forms of communication like Morse Code, being able to develop an emergency plan, the list goes on and on. The problem is the mainstream liberal media would have the American populace believe that being in the military turns you into a mindless automaton that can only do two things: kill people and take orders. Nothing could be further from the truth. American military men and women are trained to be self-sufficient individuals who can not only care for themselves but can care for their friends, families, and colleagues who wear the uniform. Now, once you add the aspect of protecting our country and our freedom back into the equation, the benefit of requiring people to serve in the military increases tenfold. In the case of your average American citizen, I don't think it's so much a case of not being able to handle the truth -- I think it's more a case of being a spoiled American who has come to expect everything to be handed to him/her just because he/she is an American. This is a terrible thing to say, but I think this country NEEDS another Great Depression and/or another World War to teach some humility to the whiny-@$$ed masses.

I'm totally in support of a required miltitary for every American, male and female. I strongly believe that a stant in the miltary would rebuild some depesperatly needed pride,and it would provide structure and disclipine for our young population who are very much in need of both. Additionally, our country while once strong and respected is now a target for many other countries and frankly I belive we lack the miltary and strenghth of our people to win a war or even to fully protcet outselves. Required miltary would remendy many of these issues. I am in support of the war but I have to say that I don't think we can win, why? Because we do not have the supprot of the people and more importantly we do not have the miltary (thanks to clinton and a couple other past decomcats that cut out military budgets) now our homeland support (the National Guard) is forced to do what a highly skilled and supported professional miltary should be doing. I also understand your concerns about "they own convenient stores" etc, but lets not get riduclous, lets face it the American male is not interested in a daily job that requires him to work for a living especially for wages that may be a skimpy as what is earned by owning a small gas station or store. Instead they'd rather go after the big bucks , many times illegally but still that what they choose. Its a lose/lose situation, unless and until people in the country start paying attention to our morals and more importantly our lack of them. I'm for shutting the borders, anyone not a american citizen should be shipped out without regard to how long they have been here, why becuase if they are here illegally than its illegal. And do we really need people other than our own breaking the laws? Also if they ever intended to become a citizen they would have done it by now and its is therefore a non-issue. I know, we started this country on immigrants and all that bull, BUT that was over 200 years ago those ideals simply do not apply any longer. Another issue is that the USA keeps giving and giving and in return we get nothing and we allow that. France is a good example of this, look at all we've done for them and in return look at what they are doing now. I say, drop a bomb or two on them, make them pay back what they owe for the war, cut them off and be done with them and other countries that have easily forgotten when we were there for them. This may sound "iffy" but, imagine, a USA where criminals were actually put to death for crimes, where eveyone respected their counrty, their flag, their government, and themselves. Imagine a nation that supported other nations and got the same in return and a country where young men and woman were forced to be responsible and respectful and had morals. That is what our forefathers had in mind. You are right, freedom isn't free and somewhere, someplace, sometime somebody will have to pay, unfortunelty the ones that often cause the problem are not the ones paying.

I can do all of that (and it is 'Morse code', not 'morris code') and a lot more- with no military training at all. in fact, I am trained enough to know that Morse code would be a silly thing to bother learning for the reasons you describe.

Certainly there are key skills a person should have that many Americans do not know. You omitted basic land navigation, food storage, emergency medicine, hiding out, and some others.

'They' are mostly good people just trying to make a living. The people who scare and worry me are the people trying to scare and worry me for invented reasons.

Every 'enemy owned' business in America could shut down right now, and it would barely affect us at all. MOST gas stations, food marts, etc. are owned by people who love the US.

Believing in foolish things because you are told to is, in itself, a foolish thing. Wake up and research things for yourself.

I certainly agree with your principle. Mandatory Military service creates a sense of unity & patriotism for the simple fact that it gives people the opportunity to defend what they believe in.
The second amendment was written for this purpose; to ensure the civilian population had the right to defend itself.
Sweden & Serbia are good examples of how this works.
However you need to strike a balance between militarism & democracy, & that is done through education. You're on the right track, but I think your analysis on domestic threats is a little extreme.

I remember in grade school many years ago when we had to watch films, movies whatever on how to protect ourselves if we were hit with the atomic bomb. We had fallout shelters. They taught us what foods we could eat and how to properly clean them. How to purify water etc. Our country isn't ready or able to handle a catastrophe. ex: hurricane Katrina. I love my country but it seems the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. I know you are not speaking as a bigot. Not all foreigners are here to kill us but we are sitting ducks for those who are.

Your own statements show that some people feel that way towards people from other countries. However, not all people have the same feelings. In fact, I would say not even most. I care much more for human rights. I care for the US Constitution, particularly the Bill of Rights. I believe that all citizens have the same rights regardless of where they originally came from and what their religion is. Yes, some muslim extremists attacked the US. Yes, they were crazy. Yes, the damage they did was horrible. However, that does not mean that muslims citizens are out there plotting to destroy the US. I am not a traitor. People who want to destroy the rights of US citizens are more dangerous to the US than any terrorist.

So....which branch of the service are YOU in, m'dear? If you're not in the service, yourself, then why not? I assume that you practice what you preach.

You DO realize that our "lovely" government has been sending our National Guard troops off to foreign lands, no? That seems terribly unjust to my way of thinking, as those folks who signed on with the Guard intended to defend the Home Front, and look what happened to them! That doesn't strike me as being quite right. What's your opinion on that issue?

Another issue: If there were a universal draft, then all of those dusky-complected foreign-looking folks--many of whom are citizens--whom you distrust so much would ALSO be drafted, right along with everyone else. After all, whether you want to believe it or not, the vast majority of those folks (or their parents and grandparents) came over here to become legitimate citizens and to get their own share of The American Dream, not to attempt to destroy it from within.

About the only thing with which I agree with you at all is the concept of all youths being "drafted" into service for their country, domestically. If memory serves, didn't Bill Clinton propose such a thing--only voluntary--in exchange for a free education and suchlike? The idea was that all youths would be assigned jobs to improve quality-of-life for everyone, with projects such as cleaning up "the inner cities" and suchlike.

Personally, I think that it'd be a good idea to have all youths go through disciplinary training (fitness, life skills, etc.). After all, not everyone was raised in a stable home, and there is too much peer pressure to use drugs, join gangs, etc.

But before youth could be mass-drafted into any quasi-military-type organization, the military would have to clean up their act. Right now, many women in the military are being sexually harrassed and even raped. Radical religious fundamentalists of all stripes (but mostly Christians) are attempting to force their views down everyone else's throats. There is already a huge alcohol--and possibly drug--problem in most branches of the military; how do we reconcile that with wanting to keep our youth "clean," out of trouble, and self-sufficient? If people join gangs before they're, say, 10 years old, then how do we keep gangs out of the military, when everyone is forced to join up?

But the main problem that I see with such a suggestion is that having a huge, ready pool of youth at hand to serve in "whatever" capacity is deemed necessary would be way-too-tempting to any warmongering Commander In Chief to use as cannon fodder on foreign soil--just as what's already happened to the National Guard.

One final thought: Please don't make the same mistake that the Nazis--and everyone who came before them--made about the Jews, only applied to people whom you perceive to be Muslims. For one thing, they're not all Muslims. Right after 9/11, a Sikh family in my city had a Molotov cocktail thrown through their their living room window. And lots of Sikh cab drivers were murdered. It's difficult to tell whether someone from the Indian sub-continent is a Hindu or a Muslim (or a Christian or a member of some other religion, for that matter)--but my point is that even IF all Muslims were dangerous (and I know you won't believe me, but they're not), you cannot just assume what someone's religion is or that someone hates our country and our culture, based on what they look like. After all, many Muslims came here in order to be free to practice the normal, everyday, MODERATE form of the religion, and they had to flee their original countries because the "Fundie Wacko" Muslims would have killed them otherwise.

P.P.S. I know I said "One FInal Thought," above, but I have to ask: Are you posting this stuff while you're supposed to be working? I refer to your, "I'm a working girl; hence no time to edit," remark, which makes me suspect that you're doing this on company time. If so, then you are part of the low worker productivitity problem in the U.S. and may be contributing to the mass-outsourcing of jobs to those countries whose citizens you distrust so intensely. Are YOU "part of the problem," too?
