We're not really sure why he is doing this. I read where we should wash him with warm water and antibacterials, but the puss has us worried about him. It doesn't really seem to bother him, but I know it can NOT be good. Please help if you have any experience with this. Thanks!

The pus is an indication of an infection and the blackening is an indication of gangrene. You need to take him to a vet to get some strong prescription antibiotics. I would guess that he is a fairly new pet (within the last 3 weeks?) or is housed with other hamsters? Hamsters will often attack the genitalia of other hamsters. If he is housed with other hamsters, he should be removed into a cage of his own so the wound isn't injured more. Without antibiotics, it is unlikely that he will be able to fight off the infection on his own, especially with the gangrene. A vet will probably need to cut these areas away as well.

If you have the stomach to do this, clean the area real good, take a cotton tip and open the area as much as you can. Empty as much puss and/or blood as your can and go back in with a different cotton tip soaked in a diluted solution hydrogen peroxide and clean out the inside of the wound.

It could be his anal sack if that was not removed and it will smell terribly. Normally the sack is emptied by rubbing his butt on the floor, furniture, you and everywhere to mark his territory. The anal sack of a ferret is similar to that of a skunk but the skunk sparys his and a ferrets just oozes out with the pressure when he scoots.

You can try neosporin put a small amount on the area 2 or 3 times a day because he is probably going to be rubbing it off when he is moving all around . If it doesn't stop oozing puss then I would take him to a vet or at least call a vet to see if he has something stronger he can give you .Good lucky hope this helps .

Two questions. Is there a dark skinned parent to this child and is she going through puberty? If one of you is a darker skin type then the pigmentation down there will be darker too, as will the color of her aureoles around her nipples. That is perfectly normal. Does she have other signs of puberty? Has she some downy body hair and are her breasts budding? If she is hitting puberty, and 10 is not unusual now days, then both the swelling and the darkening are just natural changes of that time. Again if one parent is of darker skin then it will become much darker than her overall skin, just as in a light colored person it can be darker pink to light brown. Just a sign that sexual maturity is going to occur.

My poor hamster died when this happened. They will eventually start to show signs of pain (not eating, hovering into a ball all day, etc). I found out later I could have done more to help. Here's what you need to do: Clean out his cage and sanitize it. Then, clean him with a mild soap and dry well. If you have antibiotic food, it will greatly help him with this infection. Call your vet and ask if you can get some antibiotic food / medicine / treatment for him/her. Simply washing most likely will not cure him. It's internal. If you keep the cage clean, do weekly cedar chip changes, give fresh water daily, etc, this most likely won't happen again. If you don't clean out their cage frequently, etc....they will eventually contract a bacterial infection like this. Good luck. I hope he gets well soon!

i think you should take him to the vet, if it doesn't seem to bother him, that's good, but you need to have it checked out.

If you can afford it, I would suggest taking him to the vet.
