I'm tutoring someone in Algebra 2 and Basic German. I understand how to do the math and the sentence structure of german and no matter how hard I try to explain it, he just doesn't get it. Any ideas? Right now he's learning factoing and FOIL like (x+1)(x+5)=? and school subjects in German. How do I get him to understand the concepts?

I teach Spanish and sometimes it is helpful to say the sentence in English, but in Spanish order. I do not know German, but when I teach adjectives I try to reinforce it like this:

Do we say red shirt, or shirt red?
Do we say tall girl or girl tall?

The kids get it and then they just put the Spanish words in the right order. It takes a lot of repetition.

For math it may help to make some flashcards with the order of operations written down. He can use them for quick reference and maybe it will start to sink in.
