Technically, it's a small patch of area in an otherwise large and arid desert where there exists fresh water, and plant life as well sometimes......a "life-saver" for many a dehydrated nomad.

this is from a dictionary:

2. A situation or place preserved from surrounding unpleasantness; a refuge: an oasis of serenity amid chaos.

basically it's a little piece of land in a desert that has water and therefore can sustain life.. as in plants other than cactus. Since in a desert water is precious and an Oasis is like the best thing you could find, the term Oasis is often used to imply something good among.. well crap.

An oasis is that area of land that life can be found in the desert. Normally form as a result of artisan wall. It can sustain life just because of the favorable soil & water availability there.
