Technically, it's a small patch of area in an otherwise large and arid desert where there exists fresh water, and plant life as well sometimes......a "life-saver" for many a dehydrated nomad.

this is from a dictionary:
1. A fertile or green spot in a desert or wasteland, made so by the presence of water.
2. A situation or place preserved from surrounding unpleasantness; a refuge: an oasis of serenity amid chaos.
basically it's a little piece of land in a desert that has water and therefore can sustain life.. as in plants other than cactus. Since in a desert water is precious and an Oasis is like the best thing you could find, the term Oasis is often used to imply something good among.. well crap.
