I too am 39 with some gray. You should purchase John Frieda luminous color glaze, it deposits color into your hair gradually with each shampoo. Get your wife to buy it for you if you are embarrassed( I was ) It works well and doesn't look fake or overdone. It costs about 9 dollars and has lasted me over a month with good, gradual grey coverage. I spelled grey, gray both ways in this answer, how politically correct of me.
