Your idle speed should be around 650-800rpms. Anything less it starts to bog down and over is just a waste of gas, all depending on the size of your engine. Your best bet is to get a Chilton's or Haynes manual and look it up or I believe you can go to the web sites for those books and get the info there(haven't tried personnally, got most of the books) also you can go to Alldata.com and get the info you need.

89 GMC Sonoma, the idels speed is completely computer controled and non-adjustable by owner...

idle speed is controled by computer, if it is too high or too low etc. it is because a sensor or something is wrong... something as simple as a bad thermostat opening too early at too low of a temperature i.e. 160 degrees will keep computer in cold run mode and fuel injection will be running too rich....

preventive maintainance and tuning are critical on fuel injected vehicles.. they have many inputs like coolant temperature sensor, throttle position sensors, manifold absolute pressure sensors, air intake temp sensors, these transmit info to the computer and back in milli seconds...
