I have two Collins dictionaries. An old one states :
Racialism :
"A doctrine without scientific support, that claims the superiority of some one race"
And an up-to-date states Racialism is :
"Hostile attitude or behaviour to members of other races, based on a belief in the innate superiority of one's own race"
What gets me is that 99.9% of people get the idea of racism wrong. People believe that if you don't want immigrants coming into your country because you wish to keep your culture and have sufficent jobs for your fellow countryman, how is that racist. I don't feel superior and I'm not hostile to them.
Take C1981 answer. He/she states that if you say taxes go to immigrants then you are racist. How wrong can he/she be. How would someone determine that you feel superior or are hostile to immigrants when you believe that immigrants come over and get benefits that we have paid for through taxes.
The whole debate about racism has broken down becuase the vast majority of people doesn't understand what it means. They believe that any comment about another race is racist which is wrong.
When someone says "you're racist" ask them :-
1) Do you know what that means
2) What does it say here in the dictionary
3) Do you know what it means now
Then politely ask them to get their facts right before debating in something they don't fully know.
If a Muslim was walking down the street and I shouted at them in a menacing way "Get out you ***** *******", I'm racist.
If I went upto a Muslim and said "Us British are better than you", I'm racist.
If I picked a stone up and threw it at a Muslim, I'm racist.
But if I politely said, in a debate, I would prefer Muslims or any other ethnic origin not to come into our country because I feel we would lose our culture and values and with 3 million on the dole, shouldn't every Englishman have a job. That's NOT racist.
Can you see the difference.

I'm afraid this is an age old problem, and it is usually leftist socialists who are guilty of dismissing any debate about immigration as racist. IT IS NOT RACIST TO TALK ABOUT IMMIGRANTS!!!!!!! I would agree with your observation that is usually the person accusing that is the true racist and they are ashamed or even scared that the debate will expose them. Frankly I do not see what is racist about not wanting loads of people in your country to take what is not rightfully theirs and depriving the people in that country of what they have worked for, its not just down to the gross incompetance of the government why the NHS is in bother, the immigrants are taking their toll on it too as well as all the other problems they are causing, even in some cases coming here as a refuge from their own country because they're wanted by the police, thing is it's not long before they do the same here, look how many immigrants have been imprisoned for murder and other major crime. The other reason why I think immigration is closely followed by racist is because the people who are pro-immigration seem to think that immigrants can do no wrong, and cannot bear to see them being attacked, even when they have done wrong. 7/7 and 21/7 were committed by immigrants, that is a fact, not racism. Personally now I switch off when called racist for my views because not only do I believe that I will be vindicated in my belief that the amount of immigration into Britain is wrong, but because the people doing the calling usually socialist types full of Labourist ideals and social theory and are therefore more biased and frankly more ignorant than I could ever be.

Why do people assume any criticism of Israel comes from an antisemite? That isn't fair either. But the fact remains that while not all people who criticise ISrael hate Jews, people who do hate Jews swarm around any criticism of Israel like bees around a crash involving a syrup truck and a flower truck.. Same with the immigration thing. Not all people who oppose immmigration are racist, but racists find it to be a "respectable" way to express their racism. BTW, it's not totally unfounded. A good equation to produce a racist is 1 anti immigration activist + 3 beers.

When you are saying things like all our taxes go to immigrants then it is racist because you are assuming that immigrants are all lazy people who sit on their arses all day watching the TV.
Just because you dont beat the crap out of someone for being from a different country doesnt mean that you arent racist - this small-mindedness is the worse kind of racism because it comes from supposodly educated people who think because someone wants to live in a new country they shouldnt be allowed.
Answer this first:
1) Is it all immigrants you hate (i.e. Australians, New Zealanders, Americans, Canadians, Polish, Ukranian, Russian, Iraqi, Iranian) or was it just the last five I mentioned?
2) Has any members of your extended family or friends ever lived in another country (Australia, America, New Zealand, Canada)?
3) Do you pay for every medical treatment you have? (trust me they cost a lot more than what you are paying in tax each month)
Well go on and answer those three questions - you can see by my profile I accept email

I think it's a sensitive issue because no one seems to remember that the Irish, Jews, Italians, etc. were not wanted in this country either. At one point, your own ethnicity wasn't wanted probably. So it's wrong to say that MEXICAN immigration is a problem when the problem is that immigration in general is a problem though Mexico happens to be the biggest source. Personally I have a much bigger problem with all of the anti-American Arabs allowed into this country who are given financial aid preference over the rest of us. If I hear one more Arab girl say that all American girls are harlots and the US should burn, I'll rip the hijab right off her head. I think we should concentrate our attentions on the enemies of humanity and the US and not on individual groups who actually like this country.

Adam...is it not how the question is composed. I think people can tell if the questioner is truly looking for an answer to mull over - or to wind up, to see how many 'Guardianistas', fairly mature people or students they can vex. Realise some might not have a great deal of skill in arguing points - sometimes I've even balls'd up. But truly Adam - after some time studying people's prose...and reactions to their questions can have you see if they are searching for knowledge, or merely creating 'fun' of their own on account of their lifestyle (which probably is not the sort they wish on account of their social skills - or lack of), or indeed their thoughts on people from other parts of the world.

Very true! In the current climate, it is dead easy to be labelled a racist. It's the easiest way to win an argument about anything to do with colour or immigration! As soon as something vaguely detrimental is mentioned, the shout "Racist" goes up!

Good point! And very well put. I agree that talking about immigration doesn't always involve racism, it's just common sense.

I so agree with jonathanoneill9's answer. But I also believe that the people who mostly incite racial hatred are these PC idiots who cause so mush tension and sit up high demanding that everyone be tolerant of everyone else. Yes in an ideal world, but I dislike all sorts of people and all sorts of different aspects of different cultures, it doesn't make me racist, it makes me human.

Simple if you use terms like you are racist, homophobe or xenophobe, and other names.
They can dismiss you points out right rather than dealing with it.
It is just a way to avoid the debate that is all.
