I'm a fairly new owner of a Russian Tortoise. Last night I came home to find him with ridges on his arms. It looks like some of his scales fell off. Do they shed? Or is he just growing? I'm kind of worried.

Tortoises do shed.

if the flakes are thin and translucent, and the skin under them looks healthy, then this is no problem.

If there looks like there might be a problem, try the Medical Issues section of http://www.austinsturtlepage.com

Austin's is a good general turtle site for other info as well. Others would include:

I own an African Star Tortoise, I tink ur tortoise is juz sheddin. My tortoise ( Adam ) , when i got him i panicked when i saw d same thing as u did but after i took him to the vet, she said its natural coz he grows new "skin" like snakes. Had him when he was as big as a match box but now he's still growing n as big as my palm..cute lil buggers.
