My husband collects old coins and he read that you should not clean them before putting them away. Is this true, and if so, why?

If the coins are intended for collection, you may not want to clean them at all. If you must, I would use dishwashing detergent and a soft cloth. Before you do anything, I suggest that you talk to a coin dealer, as the slightest scratch from a cleaning effort can reduce the coin's value markedly.

I'm guessing here, but I would think for the same reason that you shouldn't refinish antiques. For some reason, they are more valuable in "as is" condition. (or as was, as it were).
