John McCain was always a right-winger. He was always opposed to abortion, always a hawk, and always a political conservative. He has shown a willingness to disagree with the President, which is why people regard him as a maverick, and has been at the forefront of campaign finance reform, which is why people sometimes see him as a centrist. He also has, at times, seemed to suggest that his social conservative views were his views, and not legislative goals. But his movement toward the right in the form of sharpening these views in right-wing fora such as James Dobson's Focus on the Family is not a big stretch for him, and they are necessary to his securing the 2008 nomination.

I'm not sure what he stands for anymore. McCain seems to have a different position every day of the week. Now he's saying that Rumsfeld was the worst defense secretary ever, I'm not sure if it's because he actually thinks that, or if he thinks it'll get him votes.
