Depends on how much you want to spend. And it also depends if you want to use DirectX 10. If you don't play a lot of games and don't need DirectX 10, the Radeon X1650XT is a decent card and is excellent for all current games and will run you $130, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102068 (I like this one because it has support for HDCP for Blu-Ray and HD-DVD content, note the monitor must also support HDCP for it to work).

If you are indeed running Vista, stick with ATi for now since nvidia can't seem to get their act together with drivers. The current nvidia drivers for Vista offer little more than basic functionality and the beta version is just awful. nvidia isn't ready for Vista but ATi is more than there.

That being said, if you do play games, you will want to wait for DirectX 10 enabled video cards to come out on the market (unless you want to spend $320 for a 320MB nvidia 8800GTS). I wouldn't buy a nvidia card for use on Vista yet. So for DirectX 10 support wait for the Radeon X2600 or X2800 series and maybe nvidia will get their crap together before the next version of Windows comes out.

OK, you you're looking at a PCI-E video card upgrade. But the question is why? Are you looking for a video card for 3D gaming, or general use like web surfing, e-mail, viewing photos etc?

Gaming cards start at about $100 and go up- but there's no reason to buy a $250 card if you're not playing 3D games like Oblivion, Battlefield 2142, Vanguard etc.

If you're just looking for something a little faster, ATI's Radeon X1650 PRO and Nvidia's GeForce 7600GS are currently rated by Tomshardware as the best buys under $100.

i'd bypass with the Radeon HD 4650 1GB I proper to under it might help an ageing AGP device nevertheless play some no longer so present day video games. the cardboard i'm linking you to expenses seventy 4$ USD, and that's an excellent purchase greater cheap than paying for a clean motherboard, cpu, ram and video card. in case you're actually not on the reducing edge of gaming enjoying the main up-tp-date video games this card will serve you nicely. the guy pointing out AGP is the worst is unquestionably particularly incorrect. widely used PCI has a optimal documents throughput of 132 MB/s that's an excellent purchase slower than AGP 8X's 2,a hundred MB/s. PCI-E 16X has a max of 4000 MB/s (8000 MB/s going the two guidelines). AGP isn't a undesirable slot that's ageing yet once you do no longer prefer to complete out replace your complete computing device an AGP card remains an honest decision. wish I helped you some. If your not a gamer and if your card is compatible with Vista, your card is good enough. Only buy a PCI Express X16 Video Card.

Gee Bobby, go to the Vista web site and see what the minimum requirement is for a video card, then print and take it to your favorite computer store and talk to someone knowledgable.
