I'm 38 yrs old and 15 weeks into my 4th pregnancy. My midwife doesnt want to see me until I have had my 20 week scan. I thought because of my age, I would have been seen earlier? I even had to make my own appointment at the hospital for my bloods doing. The hospital were surprised I havent already had them done.

I assume you are in the UK, if so this is not unusual at all, I am almost due my 4th baby and it also took me that long to get a basic check up. I could not get through to the midwife, the number the doc gave me never worked, etc. I did buy my own blood pressure moniter just to check. The same thing happened with my friend who has finally got an appointment now at about 16 weeks as she has very high blood pressure.
Now I read that I should be checked every week as I have only 3 weeks til my due date however I have only one check scheduled in that time.
To be honest I don't think the midwives are much use anyway, one came yesterday to see me and when I looked in my notes she had written the date down as 19.3.06. (It was 19.2.07)

It's sounds out of place to me, but than every doctor / midwife does have their way of doing things.
Since you are 38 I'd be sure they would want to be checking up on you more than they would someone a bit younger. It's more for the things that can happen, more tests needed to be done to make sure everythings alright. But again maybe your midwife has a certain way of doing things.
If your uncomfortable about it, and no offense I would be at this point. Even if it was my 4th, I just don't like being "left out" If you know what I mean.
But if your ok with her and you don't feel out of place or anything that's great. Why you had to make your own lab appointment, that just doesn't seem right to me, honestly again if it bothers you or if you simply question it, it relaly is alright to get a new doctor.
They'd want to make sure of the date first off, and you'll have your pampsmear and regular tests, an ultrasound for another estimated date to go with yours. I have a midwife this time around (on my 3rd) and by 20 weeks I had the blood drawn, and two ultrasounds already, one for the first visit and the second for the sex of the baby. They did all the measurments, the whole bundle where you stare and stare at the screen for nearly twenty maybe more minutes to make sure baby has enough fluid, the blood flow, the heart rate, and it's entire health at this stage.
Maybe at your first visit you'll be getting that all done. Not sure, but if you don't think it's right and or you just feel uncomfortable about it, by all means change your practice and doctor right away. There's more screening done after the age 35, I'm not sure what they all are, but I do know the added risks are greater after this stage. (no offense on ladies here about age)
So do what's best for you and baby, congrats, and enjoy another wonderful pregnancy! Good luck!

I have a midwife too, this is my first pregnancy. She said they like to see all moms 10-12 weeks for their first visit. That is when they should have done your blood draws. I saw mine 2 times before 20 weeks. It kinda sounds unusual to me. They should be taking better care of you. Aren't you even considered high risk becasue of your age? I might call another doctor/midwife if I were you. Hope everything goes well and congrats!

I am 35 and 35weeks pregnant, my Dr scheduled me for genetic testing and counseling asap!! Mostly because I am 35 and there are tests you can have done to make sure all is well!! I think you need to look into a NEW midwife or a regular OBgynS office who has a midwife as well!!! you def should have had optional testing/blood work by now and have seen this midwife person!

I am quite surprised about that. I am 34 and 7 weeks into my 2nd pregnancy and I am seeing my MW next week. I understand that you are probably an expert by now, but surely you can't be expected to know everything!! I take it you didn't have a 12 week dating scan either?!?

You haven't had any prenatal care at all. That is very unusual. Because of your age I would think they would want to watch you a little bit closer. Have you had your blood pressure taken at all? You need to find someone who will see you right now. That is crazy don't risk you or the babies life. I hope every thing works out for you.

first of all let the mid wife go , you should be seen often for your age and the risk involved , get a regular obgyn and have them do all blood work and schedule a ultra sound , i understand alot of women rather use a mid wife but , sometimes for the sake of the baby its best to see a reg obgyn for the prenatal care then see your mid wife for birthing etc , what if something goes wroung and u cant get ahold of her for the problem u r having , way out the risk , your age has a lot to do with complications im not saying there will be any but the risk are greater with the younger u are and the older you are , anyway good luck and i hope everything turns out ok let us know how the baby is when he/she arives

I dont think that is to crazy. Its just after you begin your 2nd trimester. Not only that but she probably isnt that concerned about you not knowing whats going on. You have been through 3 pregnancys. If something was wrong you would know it. Not only that what could she tell you that you dont already know? You know what your body is going to do as far as morning sickness or tenderness. She probably cant hear the heartbeat that strong and she would probably have to dig for it... cause the baby is so small it is hard to find. More or less i think she thinks that you know when something would be wrong and if it was wrong you would call like any experianced mommy :)

4th pregnancy and 38...I would really think about changing Midwives, she should very much want to see you before 20 weeks!
I worked as a midwife, and I always wanted to connect with my clients long before 20 weeks, really as soon as they found out they were pregnant...
