We've rented a cabin at Big Bear (about 100yrds from the lake) for two weeks in June/July. My husband and I will be taking his three kids ages 15, 12 and 9. How safe will it be to let his kids wonder around the immediate area and on the lake shore (NOT in the lake) alone for short periods of time? He's already told them that they can ride their bikes around without supervision....

I have lived in Big bear I would say it is pretty safe just watch them as it can be easy to get lost. Enjoy your vacation

I'd make them stay together if they are going to explore in the immediate area. Unfortunately, there is bad people everywhere.
