The question asked may have nothing to do
with the properties of the candidate himself.
That is, we're not comparing Obama's
political opinions against Sharpton, etc.

However, he has a far better chance of GETTING
ELECTED because the country is far more
progressive in terms of race than it was at
the time that these other candidates tried
for the Whitehouse.

Times change. I think it would be far easier
to elect a Catholic to the White house than
it was 50 years ago. It was a BIG deal when
JFK ran for office - people wondered if
his Catholicism would effect his policy.

Frankly, I don't see how we can compare
the candidates - they are of different times
trying to solve different problems with
different competition.

I think Obama may project being "of the people"
more than either of the mentioned candidates
mentioned, but I think the extreme idiocy
of the regressive neo-cons has stunned people
into looking forward again, at least for a little
while. Between the general progression of
race relations and as simple backlash from
neo-cons, Obama has a much better chance.

Al Sharpton does not represent mainstream America, and Shirley Chisholm ran at a time when women were not considered serious. Barack Obama appeals to more people. Personally I don't favor him for President because he is much too liberal for my taste, not because he is black. His speeches have a moderate tone, but his voting record as a politician is extremely liberal and for that I don't think he can become President unless he moves more to the center in actuality not what he says or writes in a book.

You put this young(relatively)man on TV, hype it like crazy, go to the hot buttons of whatever it takes to create something out of nothing. I'm not knocking Obama, but for pete's sake, he's a relatively neophyte senator who wasn't there when the vote was taken about Iraq. I couldn't care less that he's 1/2 direct African descent(literally) and just could be a bit popular with African-Americans. The USA needs the best person in charge and it sure isn't him - he's not nor may never be ready. I honestly believe that a woman president will come along long before even an absolute African-descent American like Obama. The American people for the most part are sick, sick of the bs that's gone down with Geo. W(43). A president learning on the job with W.'s waste basket in the White House still full(I meant to say 'IN' basket) is of no use to the citizens of the US.

Shirley Chisholm was actually the first black to run for President; and a woman. People were not ready for either in 1972.
Al Sharpton is actually a nasty piece of work. He's simply not suitable.
People are quite ready now to elect a woman and/or a black. Obama is attractive and personable. It remains to be seen whether people think he is ready for the Presidency, and whether the people are in agreement with his policies.

Number one this is 2007 & a lot of young folk of voting age are more open minded than when Shirley Chislom or Al Sharpton were candidates. Plus he's an extremely intelligent, likable young man who seems to really care about the issues that the working class & poor people care about.

One of the primary reasons he stands a better chance is his capacity to raise money. The thing that separates a "fringe" candiate from a contender is the kind of capaign that they can run.
Obama raised and spent $14 million in the general election against Keyes in 2004 which shows that he has a huge ability to raise money. Currently, he is being very successful at fundraising and there are predictors that show he will be able to gather enough to fund a complete run for the presidency.

Al Sharpton raised very little money (comparitively) for his political campaign and he had never held political office before.

There's an excellent article here
http://www.blackinthecity.net/news/politics/black-presidential-candidates-before-obama.html
that gives a good overview of the other African-American presidential candidates.

Well Al Sharpton is an intelligent man and would not mind having him as a friend but he has not much credability. People still remember how he backed up and still has not apologized for that woman who made up the story about white men raping her. Shirley? Probably too radical. It will probably take a conservative black to be the first one. Obama may be a nice guy, but he is in over his head.

He's focusing on a different demographic. He's not running as an African American president, he's running as a young progressive thinking president. He wants to oust the baby-boomers and bring some new ideas to the table. I like the guy. Unfortunately the groups he's trying to represent (18-28 and 29-39) have the poorest voter turnout!

If Barack Obama beats out Hellary Clinton (get it? "Hell"ary? she sucks) for the democratic nomination, I will definatly vote for the first time. Bust as far as why he has a better chance, he's just real. He doesn't have an agenda like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson do, and he wasn't born with a silver spoon in his mouth
