I go for massage regularly at fairly-high end places, and it is IMPOSSIBLE not to get aroused. Any man who says otherwise is lying. Some women handle it naturally and pleasantly, and some freak out. You can guess which ones I tip well and go back to.....

I've had a lot of good and bad with massage, so I will tell you some of the postive and negative things that I have had with certain practitioners.

- It's important to be a good listener. If the client says there hamstring is hurting, and you hardly work on that area, he or she is not going to come back. Don't just go through your routine the same way every time.

- Don't pick up the phone or eat while you have a client in there.
- Don't bring up politics or religion unless the client brings it up first. People are looking to relax. I've had two therapists surprisingly make politically charged comments at me, when all I was looking to do is relax.
- Be thorough. Many therapists skip the glutes, adductors, hamstrings, quads, and the abs. I can understand the abdominals being optional, but if the client is paying, the rest should be included and is important to a client's overall well being.
- Make sure the client is properly draped and that the light is not shining right in the client's eyes...
- Only talk during the massage if the client wants to. Some people would rather just relax and you talking will take away from that. Many others will want to chat, and that is fine.
- If a guy gets aroused but does nothing else, such as grab your arm or grab himself, don't flip out! It's a natural occurence...it doesn't mean he's thinking anything bad! Just act normal, don't start asking him questions about his grandma like one lady did to me, or you will embarrass him further!

I am a male and have been an MT since 2000. My main gripe is what I call the "Male Eyes Syndrome", which is that some women have the mistaken notion that all male MT's have a sexual agenda with their female clients. When I worked for a spa in NJ, the underlying feelings of some of the female clientele was "I don't want his male eyes looking at me !" But, after I finished working on them, they became regular clients of mine.

So, the one thing I would wish for, is for the "massage parlor" mentality to be gotten rid of by education of the females that have reticence in choosing a male MT.

The best part of my chosen profession is the knowledge that what I am doing is actually helping people, and that knowledge to me is priceless.

Hah! It's funny you ask! Although I know that this won't happen to you, it is pretty funny.
The ONLY massage I have ever had, I fell asleep on the table. I woke up with my back in alot of pain, and I got up. The pain got so fierce that I had to leave for the ER.
I am not sure if my masseuse did it, or if she irritated another injury, but I had a torn muscle in my shoulder!
Afterwards, I heard alot of bad things about the masseuse I went to anyways, so don't let this story bother you!
Good Luck! I am sure that you will do fine!

I have been a massage therapist for 9 years and I could tell you a lot of good and bad. The one thing I have learned over time is to LISTEN. The patient/ client is how you make money, there needs are what they are there for, address them and keep them coming back to see you. I was taught one thing that I have been using since I got out of school.

KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID!!!

Peace

Ive had negative experiences with a masseuse that doesn't listen. I kept telling her specific things that I dislike, and she was more interested in what MOST people liked or what she was good at. Always put the customer first :-)
