Education and Retirement. The cost for tuition alone for a 4 year degree is (conservatively) expected to increase about 6%/year over the next 16 years to approximately $145k for a state school and $335k for a private school and very possibly could increase at a much higher rate. 529 plans are a great way to save for college education. Some people don't consider retirement as a purchase but I would disagree. Basically with a retirement plan you're trading what the money you're putting away would provide you today in exchange for "buying" a portfolio that will generate a cash flow for you when you are no longer working and earning an income.
