There are many different types of insulation which all have a different application. If the stud walls are open than you want to use a general batt insulation. Batt is the most commonly known insulation. If the studwalls are already closed by drywall that you want get the insulation that is blown by drill a hole in the drywall and fill the cavity. If you have 18" thick studs you would be able to get a great "R" value of insulation in there. Generally for a new house in colder climates you want R-19 in the walls and an R-30 in the ceiling.

If the studs are open the expanding foam or blown cellulose is the best. Cellulose can be blown in holes in drywall if that is already in place. Fiberglass batt insulation is good but does not discourage pests and rodents like cellulose or foam. Fiberglass batting would probably be the least expensive. The cellulose would probably be the best balance of efficiency and cost. Styrofoam or expanding foam would be maybe a little better insulating value but more expensive. Check the yellow pages for insulation companies or go to a home improvement store and ask questions. Some of them have the equipment you can rent if you want to do it yourself.

I don't understand your question. You want to insulate the outside of your brick house. Are you going to cover it with siding? If you mean to fill the inside stud cavities with try and find someone who uses expanding foam. It gives you the best insulating value. It might cost more than the rolled pink stuff but it fills every crack and seal the house up airtight.

Styrofoam sheets... easy to install, easy to cut and shape, don't need a mask to install it... moisture resistant and no mould... unfortunately a bit more expensive per square foot but well worth the money.
