Money. Plain and simple economics.
From 1961 to 1972, the US space program spent (in today's dollars) about $600 Billion to get us to the moon 6 times. Nobody has been willing to commit that kind of money since then. Now, I know that pales in comparison to the $42 Billion we spend PER DAY to just pay the interest on the national debt...perhaps if our presidential administrations would stop running up such hugh budget deficits that cost us so much in interest, we would have more money available to fund an ambitious space program...

What is to be gained? The space station is providing more valuble information then a moon visit would. Our trips to space are spent dealing with the satilite network, the hubble space telescope and a bunch of other things.

Until overpopulation -really- becomes a problem, or we start running out of a vital resource like oil, or another Cold War starts up, we don't have a need to go to the moon. Right now we have much more benefits from satellites.

There is no real incentive to go to the Moon anymore, and because NASA has a lot of funding cuts that limit what they can do in space travel.
Even now, whenever they send up a space chuttle (I believe the only one still in operation is the Endeavour?) only stays in the Earths orbit wrking on the ISS.

The point of diminishing returns has been reached long ago. There is very likely not much new that can be learned from another moon trip.

It was very expensive to send men to the moon. They only did it to prove that they were better than the Russians. Nobody cares about the Russians any more, so nobody can justify the expense.

Because they never sent astronauts to the moon.
