If he is prosecuted by the State Attorney General Mike Cox he will be charged with a felony and face up to 4 years in prison. They only accept cases if they believe they can get the money out of the guy. My ex was charged by Mike Cox office one month ago and he has to pay at least 1/2 of his arrearages to bring his felony to a misdemeanor. If he doesn't pay at least 1/2 they said he will get at least 3 months in jail (he is 14,000 behind) and have a felony on his record. You need to contact Mike Cox child support division and ask them to send you paperwork to issue a felony warrant. It is against the law to desert your children. Call(517)373-1111.

It depends. If the judge has ordered you to pay child support and you don't pay, then you are in contempt of court. The judge can sentence you to civil jail for as long as it takes for you to pay the money you owe. There have been cases all over the country where judges put dead-beat dads into jail until they finally pay the child support.

Don't know for michigan, but I do know in Ontario, the non payment parent's pic is up on a website www.goodparentspay.com and they are talking about taking driver's licensces away and passports. I think it's a GREAT idea.

Shame on any parent who doesn't pay. Setting up a great example there. Your kids are suffering because you are po'd at your spouse.

Not sure. The problem should have been iniated before it hit this price range. This must have been many years of owed support, I feel kinda bad for the kids. But I don't know the situation.

Duoak is correct; in fact, I believe there is a case in PA that just entered it's 10th year (the guy still sits in jail, refusing to pay) of a man being held in civil contempt. Priceless.

depends upon the state, the judge and how many times they have warned 'em.... at first they put them in until he/she comes up with a chunk of cash (not the whole amount, but something) from friends, family and who ever.

remember, if your caseworker (or dept) isnt on the ball, fax a letter to your Regional FEDERAL Child Support Office, Governor and Attorney General... keep faxing them until they help you.

I have yet to see them enforce anything here in Ohio to that extent. We are lucky if they suspend a driver's license, much less put them in jail.

Not long enought, and its deadbeat parents like that that sicken me, and the poor child is the one who suffers.
