The proper name for an ocean scientist is an oceanoligist and not an oceanographer.
The oceanographer explores and document what is seen, whereas the oceanogoligist studies, analyses and gives his scientifically based informed findings

A general term would be oceanographer. Depending on their area of expertise, there might be a better term. For example, a marine biologist studies animal and plant life in the ocean... A marine geologist studies the ocean's geology.
