Sadly, it's their job. I could never be a defense lawyer and lie through my teeth for a criminal, but these people have to. Maybe they sold their souls....

In a lawyer less country let's say there are 75 women murdered by knife and the police kick your door open, you have been named by some anonymous call as the murderer, you have no alibi and your physical description match the one of the criminal. The police say they found pornographic material, knives and women underwear. Later that night you confess to the police. Your are sentenced to death and before being injected all you can say in a week voice is "No please, I'm Innocent." and then the darkness.
No one cares that the call was made by your ex wife, or that the knifes were not the same used in the crimes, or that the underwear belonged to some ex girlfriends, or that a witness was mistaken, or that your confession was taken after 12 hours of physical and psychological torture. This kind of things have happen in the US, so imagine how would it be without lawyers.
The work of a lawyer is to defend you and protect you from an unfair trial; unfortunately many people think that being a good lawyer, means someone that can get you free even if you are guilty, and in order to win some lawyers cheat the law. As a lawyer your are not bound to "win" every case, your are bound to do your best to protected the defendant's "rights" that's all.
Unfortunately we live in a system where winning is all that matter, and that's why police arrest inocent people, and that's why the courts never want to admit they send to jail an inoccent man, and that why lawyer blind themselves to win at all costs. Everyone want to win so everyone cheat. They don't care about the law they just want to win.
So if everyone in the systen lie, and cheat, How can a lawyer know for sure his client is guilty or not; Becasue the police said so? Well the police arrest inocent people all the time, by mistake or by evil heart, but they do. But what if they are guilty and go free? Well if a guilty person goes free is because the police didn't want or coudn't do their job; sometimes the police and the sate attonerys want to send someone to jail without proof and once the lose they blame the defendant's lawyer. Why? Because it's easier to blame someone else, instead of doing their job.
If the police and the state would do their job as they are suposed to do, honest lawyers wouldn't have to worry about winning when they don't want to win.
Everyone hates lawyers until they need one.

According to the constitution in this country everyone is innocent until proven guilty. Everyone is also entitled to representation in a court of law. I think often the defendant's attorney may know they are guilty, but try to give them the best representation that they can, which often means a plea agreement for the best sentence possible for the crime they have committed. Sometimes I do believe the attorney's know or think they know that their client is innocent and work hard to get them acquitted. Read John Grisham's book 'The Last Innocent Man'. It is quite an eye opener into our legal system. It is a true story.

Defense counsel serves a much more important function than trying to "get off" a murderer. The fact that every accused person has the right to counsel keeps the police and prosecutors on their toes. They have to do everything by the book, or they risk losing a trial. This helps prevent sloppy work and corruption. If you think of the defense lawyer in a murder trial as the person insuring that the police and the prosecutor did their jobs correctly, you can see how he can do his job. He is not always trying to set the murderer free - rather he is insuring that if the person is convicted, they were convicted fairly.

I have asked myself that question. Probably for a couple of reasons. If they are a high-stakes lawyer that takes on big cases, there is a lot of money involved. But, I also think there are those who truly believe in the law and that everyone has a right to a fair trial, even murderers.

The pay is pretty good if you are a private attorney. If you are a public defender, you have to it is your job. Pickton has a public defender, it is their job and obligation to provide the best defense possible. Everybody is entitled to a fair trial. (he is only currently being charged with 6 murders). There will be a second trial for another 20 murders.

if they are very good, they may win the case, who cares about them being guilty or not. sad, but true.. it happen quite a few times in my country:( the evidence must be very strong n convincing because they can manipulate everything, even the witness..

Some of them wrap themselves up in the idea that even a guilty man is entitled to his day in court, and many defense lawyers use manipulation of the facts and the law to justify the defendant's act to the court and to themselves.

It is a very hard job! I couldn't imagine doing it, but somebody has too. They(murderers/criminals) unfortunatley have the right to a trial just like everyone else.

Because all dirtbags have the "right" to legal representation, even from a dirtbag lawyer, and its for the sake of money, not for what is right or wrong, but for money.
