I think a bloke somewhere challenged either someone or a government that no one owned the moon and he was proved right. So a Lunar Society was set up where you can purchase land on the moon in acre plots. 95% of the money is retained for moon exploration. Might be a loss leader but I bought an acre each for my 2 lads. Who know's !!

Dennis Hope. He found a loop-hole in the 1967 Space Treaty that prohibits any nation from appropriating any celestial object. Hope pointed out that the treaty applies to nations and not individuals and on that basis claimed the moon and all the planets of the Solar System beyond the earth along with their moons for himself.
He has formed a company, the Lunar Embassy, and is selling off sections on the Moon and Mars to those who wish to share in the ownership of these bodies.
His claim is modelled on the U.S. Homestead Act of 1862. However the act allows only 160 acres to be owned. Furthermore, one can take ownership only by living on or cultivating the land for a period of five years. As the surface area of the Moon is greater than 160 acres and Hope has not lived on or cultivated the land for five years yet, his claims are a little premature. In spite of this, he has made millions from the sale of 'his' extraterrestrial property.

Whoever gets there first. Even then, they would own only the area they could control.
There is a treaty about this, but it was not ratified by the the U.S., Russia, China, India, Japan, or anybody else who might get to the Moon.

The Moon belongs to every citizen of the Earth, no one person or organisation can ever own it legally.

For all of those whose answer indicated ownership of said property, "The Moon". I am the property tax collector for the interstellar neighborhood improvement association. Please remit payment of your current and delinquent tax roles to my paypal account. Your current bill comes to 2.3 billion dollars U.S. Also, if you could clean your property some, maybe plant some trees, or put up a fence. It is so barren looking.

What kind of question is that. The creator of the universe owns it. The people of the world have adopted it.

Technically no one. It is the Earth's moon. It doesn't belong to us.

Nobody owns it. But I'm sure if we reach the point where it's easy to get to, all the nations will be fighting over it.

By international treaty, nobody owns the moon.
The Americans planted an American flag on it in the name of all mankind. (giggle)
