The sign is used throughout the UK and is a recangular yellow plate with a black letter H on it. It is used to indicate the position of fire hydrants. Other countries have similar signs.

There are two numbers, the top number is the diameter of the water pipe in mm and the bottom number is the distance to the fire hyrdant in metres.

Old style signs were white and dark purple colour and used feet and inches rather than the metric equivalent. Most purple signs have now been replaced.

They are there for the purposes of playing the 'high/low' game. This is a game for two people and is perfect for long car journeys. When you see one you ask you're partner "high or low" to which they choose either the high number - the one above the H, or the low number, the lower number below the H. Depending on their answer you then punch your partner the corresponding number of times!
