Okay, here goes.

A rainbow is an optical and meteorological phenomenon that causes a nearly continuous spectrum of light to appear in the sky when the Sun shines onto droplets of moisture in the Earth's atmosphere. It takes the form of a multicoloured arc, with red on the outside and violet on the inside. A double rainbow includes a second, fainter, arc with colours in the opposite order, that is, with violet on the outside and red on the inside.

Even though a rainbow spans a continuous spectrum of colours, traditionally the full sequence of colours is most commonly cited and remembered as red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet (Roy G. Biv).

The rainbow effect can be observed whenever there are water drops in the air and sunlight shining from behind the observer at a low altitude or angle. The most spectacular rainbow displays when half of the sky is still dark with draining clouds and the observer is at a spot with clear sky overhead. The rainbow effect is also commonly seen near waterfalls or fountains. Rainbow fringes can sometimes be seen at the edges of backlit clouds and as vertical bands in distant rain or virga. The effect can also be artificially created by dispersing water droplets into the air during a sunny day.

Good question. When this happens, when you see a rainbow, you are standing between the Sun and the rainbow, with rain between you and the rainbow. The sunlight comes from behind your back and is reflected from the drops of rain in the direction of the rainbow and back to your eyes. The rain drops separate the white light of the Sun into its separate colors violet through orange and red. Check this out the next time you see a rainbow. Look to see where you are, where the sun is, and where the rainbow is. Ok?

After it has rained there are still little droplets of mist in the air.. the sun caused light to pass through these rays..which causes the light to refract and release a prism of light...
When this happens ot happens not only to a single mist if water but a lot of watter and this causes a rainboe ( the different prisms of coloured light).
Did you know that there are rainbows in the night? This is the same only the moon provides the light. This type of rainbow is called a moonbow!! Intresting isnt it?
Hope that helped... :P

its the colours that we cant usually see. its like a prism( the little glass blocks we had in science at school) the water acts as a prism and so reflecting the whole colour spectrum.the sun shines through the water at a certain angle to show the colours.

they can also be seen as complete circles from a plane!
