I suggest staying in hostels instead of hotels or B&Bs. They are really cheap (usually about 12 pounds a night) and they aren't as bad as some people say they are. I stayed in hostels every night of a 2 week tour of the UK and I loved every one of them. Check out http://www.hostels.com/en/gb.en.lo.html for lots of choices.

I thought Londoners were very nice and helpful when I had questions. And I had a lot of questions considering I was lost most of the time, lol. I went in May and the weather was beautiful. T-shirt and jeans weather, but no matter when you go I recommend you bring a rain jacket or buy a small umbrella when you get there. Better safe than sorry. If you go in fall or early spring bring thin clothing that you can layer in case it is colder. To keep your suitcase lighter I recommend leaving things like shampoo, soap, toothpaste, etc. at home and just buy little travel versions in London. They will probably have all the same kinds you like to use. This way you get around that liquid/gel/aerosol rule if you're taking a plane.

Bring a little cash, debit card, and credit card. Don't bring travelers checks, they're terrible. Most places you can use your debit card like cash. I had a money belt to put my cash and stuff in to protect it from pickpockets.

As for tourist sights I loved the London Dungeon. It's a mix of wax figures, actors, and awesome sets to explain the darker, bloodier side of London. I also loved the London Eye (the giant ferris wheel on the Thames), Tower of London, Trafalgar Square is pretty. I didn't get to visit the museums but I'm sure the British Museum is fascinating with all their ancient Greek and Egyptian articles. I'll put links to websites below in the source place.

As for any other info, go on one of those double decker bus tours of the city. The ticket is good for 24 hours and it's a hop-on hop-off kind of tour so if you see something you like just get off, do your thing, and the next bus will be round to pick you up. Gives you a great overview of the city so it's good to do first thing. Check out some of the pubs and restaurants to mix with locals. At any rate, have a blast!

There looks like some good suggestions here, but i thought I'd give you a few more:

The Official London Tourism Office - probably the most authoratitive website on London available. Plenty of links.

Accommodation in London - create your budget, choose a location close to what you want to do ( save on transport and time ), the level of comfort you want ( sort by star rating ) and price - Cheaper than Hotels - London is another useful website.

July 21 to August 31 is the peak tourist season. If you want to avoid crowds go in June or September - also airfares are lower then. The weather is always unpredictable, but there's always a break between showers.

Depending on where you're coming from, London is very expensive so bring as much money as you can! Trip Advisor is a great site to use for planning purposes. Make sure you buy an Oyster card for cheaper travel on the tube and bus. www.tfl.gov.uk

Good times to come are from May to October- gets very busy in July/August. Who knows what the weather will be like, could be cold, could be hot, might rain. Be prepared for anything and check the weather before you go.
