A chicken is born with thousands of egg cells (ova) and only one ovary. As soon as the hen is old enough to lay eggs the ova will start to mature usually only one at a time. If more than one matures then the egg will have a double yolk. Since chickens will not produce any more ova when their ova supply is depleted they stop laying eggs and end up in the pot. The average hen produces about 2,000 to 4,000 eggs in a lifetime. laying eggs begins 5 months after they are hatched. Most hens tend to average about 225 eggs per year. In 2001 the total chicken population was 286 million which means that there were more chickens than people. The chickens are kept cooped up in a controlled temperature warehouse type setting, fed a special diet and not allowed to move about and forced to lay egg after egg to about 200 to 300 per year. Each breeder house holds 9,000 chickens and 900 roosters to keep them happy. The larger chicken ranches produce around 250,000 eggs per day. The chickens as we know them today are roughly around 5,000 years old and not one of the first domesticated animals. Chickens unlike other fowl will continue to lay eggs in a nest until a specific number is reached. By removing the eggs at regular intervals the chicken feels that it must lay more eggs . the blood spots in eggs is not because they have been fertilized. When the yolk membrane travels down the reproductive tract and before it is surrounded by th albumen it is possible for a small drop of blood to attach itself to the yolk. The blood may be the result of a small arterial rupture or from some other source of bleeding . It does not indicate that fertilization has taken place and if the egg is properly cooked it is not harmful.

ANyway back to your question. No roosters are not needed for the chickens to lay eggs but every chicken ranch does have roosters on it. Although the roosters are unable to get to the females the females are happy just looking at the big guy.
I lived near one of the biggest egg ranches in southern california. Thats how I know about the old chickens becoming cambells because cambells bought the ranch. Hope you find the other info interesting at least a little.

NO. The chickens are female and they produce eggs that are infertile (which is what you want to eat - no blood spots) all by themselves everyday or so. They do not need to have a male (rooster) having sex with them to crank out those eggs.
Think of it as equivalent to humans. If a women produces an egg every month and then the egg is swept away by her monthly period, doesn't that event (including the noticeable period) occur every month even without her having sex?
If you don't get the idea of that, take a sex education course.
On the few occasions when the farmers need fertile eggs to produce the next generation of chickens then the roosters are needed for fertilization - not at any other time.

A cow must be pregnant and have a calf before she produces milk. She will produce milk for quite a while after calving, but must be bred again to produce more milk. They are generally allowed to be dry (not milking) for a few months while bred before they start milking again. Goats are the same as cows. Chickens lay eggs, some fertilized, some not. Chickens can't necessarily be pregnant because even if the egg is fertilized, they lay on it, not carry it inside them.

No, or you would be eating fertilized eggs. Hens lay eggs even without the male. The only way the rooster is used is to fertilize the eggs so that there will be baby chicks.
Different breeds of hens lay the white and brown eggs.

No,chickens go through two major laying stages, then the farmer gets rid of them and gets new ones. They don't need to be fertilized. The first stage ,the eggs are larger. Then the chicken kind of goes dormant for a while then she has another go ,but the eggs are smaller.
