What is the best way to prepare yard for tomatoes?

I have a small back yard and have tried a couple of times to grow tomatoes. They are very small if they bloom at all. The vines are gorgeous. What is the best way to fertilize and prepare my yard for these plants? Thanks!

I would speak to someone in the gardening dept at either Lowes or Home Depot, or both , & get their advice on what specific plant food or soil nutrient works best in your area.
