Is the accordian a hard instrument to learn?

Yep , it's one of the hardest in the book , multifunctional dont even begin to cover it !!

yes, definitely. You need a lot of music theory knowledge because not only you have to keep a melody in one hand, in the other hand you have buttons with "chords" so you have to know pretty damn well which chords go with which scale....
apart from that there's also a lot of hand/hand coordination to master to be able to play equally well with both hands....
and last but not the least, a LOT of different buttons to remember.

Start with something simple, like recorded or synthesiser so you learn some musical theory first.
