Always look for 2 things:
Make sure the site begins with https:// (note the 's')
Make sure you can see a small padlock to the bottom right of your browser.
These things show that the site has a working/verified SSL certificate (Secure Socket Layer).
However, nothing is ever 100% safe on the internet unless you are directly connected to the recipient.

First check how popular a website is. If it is a popular web site or business, there is nothing wrong in giving your credit card info.
Look for SSL, this is a lock icon on browser, url start with https://
SSL do not guarantee your credit card info is in secure hands, it only mean transaction between your computer and the web site is secure. If a hacker have access to that web site, your credit card info get into hands of hacker.
Many sites use third party service to process credit card, that is site will send you to another site that process credit card, these services are normally secure (you should need an idea about third party credit card processing company, then only you know if the site is reliable or not, some are 2checkout.com, paypal.com, clickbank.com, etc...)

it depends what browser you have, if you have IE then the adress bar will turn yellow and a lock sign will appear. This means it is going through a encrypted connection to the selected recipient. But there are always hackers out there- since there are so many people transfering money from there credit cards, the chances are low for someone to hack the encryption you sent. But encryptions are very strong these days, so I wouldnt have anything to worry about
