How much does a power supply cost and can I replace it myself. I saw a green light at the back of the pcu, but I did not hear the fan noise. What else should I look for when I have the unit open.

The two most likely reasons for a power up failure are the power supply and the motherboard.
If your PC is out of warranty, you can easily replace the power supply. It is not repairable.

A replacement power supply costs $30-$80.
You can check with Compaq for a replacement or order one from places like www.surpluscomputers.com or www.tigerdirect.com.

Power supplies vary on the type and number of power leads or connectors. Before buying, you should check what connectors you require, and be sure the replacement has at least the same.

Four screws hold the power supply onto the case and power leads from the power supply go to the various components and motherboard. The power leads or connectors are shaped to fit only where they belong. They are also keyed to fit only one way on the socket. Don't force the connector, and you should be able to replace it.

My Compaq Presario also would not turn on, and it was not the power supply. There was nothing wrong with the excellent plus pretty new computer. Yahoo has beautiful people for technicians. A different provider when I shut off computer while it was being destroyed from within wrote, "You cannot shut off computer during a dialog" and so saying technician turned my computer immediately back on and noisily broke it so that it did not turn on. Would never have turned on again. The noise was the motherboard being destroyed. Cost: $215. to replacement and labor. If they don't like you go somewhere else. Amounts for repair will vary.

Place your hand near the back of the case to check for air from the power supply fan. Also, check the on/off switch on the power supply itself, it has a circle symbol and a minus sign.

A new power supply costs around fifty dollars. Don't bother with the cheap twenty dollar models.

You can change the power supply by unplugging it from the outlet. Open the case and unhook all of the cables coming from the supply. Then remove the screws from the back of the supply and it will come right out. Be sure to hold the supply with one hand while removing the screws or it could fall onto the motherboard.
