What are the biggest obstacles?

How long does it take before you can actually play something decent?

It's never too late to learn anything.
there are even books to be found in a good music store that are geared for the beginning adult as well as that ever-popular series- The Idiot's guide to- to be considered.
one obstacle is the time you have available to practice. Dependent on that, you could probably play an easy piece within a few weeks. Another possible obstacle- if you have suffered any hand injuries or now experiencing arthritis or carpal tunnel syndrome- these will impede your mobility. However, since you are doing this for fun and not profit, go ahead and enjoy yourself thoroughly.

You can learn the piano at any age.
The only difference between early age lessons and later lessons is that you probably have more obligations and do not have enough time to sit down and actually learn.
If you get in enough practice, you will be playing a song in no time. Hang in there, keep pounding those keys and you will see how much you have advanced in a short time.
I learned how to play the steel guitar when my kids were small but i made time to sit down and practice it each day.. It paid off because I am a prolific player now!!
