A laker is the nickname for a sea-going person of the Great Lakes area.
An LA Laker is a professional basketball player.

And, contrary to popular belief, the Lakers did NOT originate in Minneapolis. The team's origin stems from Detroit, when they were called the Gems. When the team was bought and moved to Minneapolis they changed the name to the Lakers to go with the above mentioned mariner description. The team name has stayed with them ever since.

Not a dumb question at all. I actually learned something about one of the NBA teams I absolutely loathe. Thanx!

the nickname came from when the franchise was located in Minneapolis, George Mikan was on that team, the first great big man in the NBA, they were not originally from Minn. though, they did come from Detroit but were not named the Lakers, Toronto had a team back then too, they were the Huskies, Rochester i believe had one, as well as Syracuse, The Lakers kept the name when they moved to LA just as the Jazz kept their name when they moved to Salt Lake City from New Orleans, despite no connection to jazz music in Utah whatsoever......

The Lakers take their name from their original city, Minneapolis. Minnesota is called "the land of 1000 lakes", so hence the name.
