Points are used to ask questions to the community. When you ask a question, Yahoo will deduct points from your amount. Points are also used to determine levels. At certain levels, you get more perks such as voting privileges or greater limits.

To up the amount of questions and answers you get each day, and at the end of the year, you can get a useless prize for the points you have...Levels, actually, but points lead to levels...

You don't get anything except for satisfaction. I always feel great when I reach levels but besides that an ego boost that's it.
