As to how to determine if somebody is lying, I recommend getting a book called "ever Be Lied To Again: How to Get the Truth In 5 Minutes Or Less In Any Conversation Or Situation" by David Lieberman. It's a quick read.

Depends on the social situation. To be polite, a southern bell would allude to the person being a creative speaker, or a speaker that is creative with the truth.

An indication of good upbringing and intelligence is a person's ability to deal with obnoxious people in a polite yet firm manner.

Well, sometimes if you really know that they are lying, try to trick them into knowing that you know that they're lying.
