I saw this yesterday and it seems interesting. Your route is going to have a vertical zig- zag pattern to it and involve the use of some US- as opposed to interstate- highways-

OK I just had to figure out how to deal with some problems states WV KY AR MO
Here goes
Start Washington DC
North on I-95 to Kittery ME
Via 1) MD 2)DE 3)NJ 4) NY 5) CT 6) RI
7)MA 8) NH 9) ME
Turn around and head south on I-95 then take I-495 all the way the the junction of SR 2 at Acton MA
Take 2 West to I-91 North
at10) VT exit 2 take rt 9 all the way across the state continue into NY where it become rt 7
take that to the New York State Thruway I-87 South and take that all the way to I-84 west
Take I-84 W into I-80 W in 11) PA
and then use I-79 S to I-70 W
Which just happens to touch Wheeling 12) WV
stay on I-70 W to Columbus 13 ) OH and then I-71 to Cincinnati
Cross over the bridge into 14) KY and then I-74 into Indianapolis 15 ) IN
At Indy find US 31 North to Soth Bend via Kokomo and continue north on US 31 crossing into 16) MI
US 12 west to Gary IN and then I-90 W to Minneapolis and then I-94 W to Fargo
via 17) IL 18) WI 19) MN 20) ND
I-29 S to St Joseph MO - make sure you cross the river on I -80 so you can get into Omaha Nebraska and back into IA
Via 21) SD 22) NE 23 ) IA 24 ) MO
Take US 36 West from St Jo all the way to Denver via 25) KS 26 ) CO
I-25 North out of Denver to the Jct of I-90 West
via 27) WY 28) MT
Stay on I-90 W until the othr other side of Spokane WA via 29 ) ID 30) WA
and then find US 395 South
Stay on US 395 S all the way to the jct of US 6 at Bishop CA via 31)) OR 32) CA
Take US 6 East to the Jct of SR 375
make a right take that past Area 51 - I'm serious- at Rachel 33)NV and then US 93 N into PanacaNV
Right on 319 continue into 34) UT where it becomes rt 54 into Cedar City and then rt 14 East until it meets uo w/ US 89 South,
Right on 89 into Page 35) AZ and then follow it to the jct of I-40 East at Flagstaff AZ
Stay on I-40 E all the way to Memphis TN via
36) NM 37) TX 38) OK 39 )AR 40 TN
Take I-55 South to I-12 E and then I-10 E to Jacksonville FL Via
41) MS 42) LA 43) AL 44) FL
Take I-95 North to DC via
45) GA 46)SC 47) NC & 48) VA
That's the best I can do and yes i have personally driven about 75% of the routes described

Since you say you live in the UK, I'm assuming (perhaps incorrectly) that you are UK citizens and that you lived in the US legally or were never subjected to any kind of deportation or over-stay penalty. That being the case, you can visit the US under the Visa Waiver Program for up to 90 days. Seeing every state in 90 days is near impossible without loads of cash. You could apply for a visa and be able to stay longer and seeing every state would definitely be possible. You would however be unable to legally work in the US on any kind of tourist visa (or VWP). If you do decide to do this you may want to look into actually buying a car in the US and selling it at the end of your trip. I don't know how easy it is to organize but I do know it can be done. the best way is to avoid america!

start in florida and then do a zig zag between states.you should finish in washington.or mexico?
