Anyone who has a pet and tries to keep them healthy knows that vets and animal hospitals are a bigger racket than human health care. The image of the kindly vet trying to keep Bessie the cow happy and healthy is long gone. Finding large animal vets is a real task, since so many have gone into pet care, that is, domesticated animals. I have more money in caring for my dog last year than I had to put for my kids. I do not know how a poor person could have a pet and expect to care for it. I have noticed that vet techs, vet orderlies and in house groomers are treated like crap by money hungry vets who are so money oriented that they see grinding up the help as all part of making that fortune. Any time you take a dog in, they ask if you want a physical exam (bam $50.00 for looking for lumps) if they find anything its going to cost hundreds. You will get medicine for something and you will pay more than 75% markup on that. Ask for a prescription so you can use PetCare or some other web supplier and you are out, baby out. You will get the dirtiest look, you will here that somehow Frontline purchased elsewhere is not as good (and you do want to care for Fluffy don't you sir), and the next visit you will sit in the waiting room until you want them to put you asleep. I sympathize with your intent but I think you are up against the machine there. Eventually we will see legislation to curb in the vet business but right now it is still running on the reputation of older vets who have sold their practices and are retired. Gotta tell you that much of this seems to have come with the influx of female vets who just want to work on little dogs and parakeets and still have a Lexus SUV outside. There is so much exploitation of animal lovers and especially senior citizens who are billed hundreds or even thousands to try to save their old pet. If a vet sees that this animal is incredibly important to a senior citizen, then BAM, its a big bill for futile surgeries and needless care. Sexist, maybe, but in my area it went bad when women came into the vet practices here. There are NONE who will do large animal, farm animal vet work.
