My computer keeps turning itself off on its own, and from previous questions and answers, most people on Yahoo answers said it could be over heating. Would I have to buy a faster fan or something? I dont know much about computers so be gentle with me!!!!

Based on your other question, you never posted back if you tried putting the old memory back in.

You computer first stopped shutting down AFTER you put in the new memory. You must put the old memory boack in first to determine if this is the cause. If it stays running with the old memory, then obviously its not your fan.

Once you put the old memory back in, and assuming it stays running, then you need to do a couple of things:

1) Get a program that can give details of the type of memory you currently have (the old stuff). Specifically the timing of your old memory. Here is a link to a good clean program that can give you this info: http://www.sisoftware.net/index.html?dir=dload&location=sware_dl_3264&langx=en&a=

2) Once you get the results of the memory test. Turn off the PC and remove the old memory and look at both the old and new together. If there are stickers on them, see if the are similar (333mhz, DDR, PC2700, PC3200, etc.) make sure they are the same, or if not post back here an differences.

3) If you are reasonably certain that the new memory is compatible, then put it back in and make sure that you firmly but gently set them back in the sockets.

4) Boot the machine back up and if you can, run the same memory test in Windows.

5) If you can not boot back up, or shut down right away, then you need to check you memory sticks one at a time. If one works and the othere doesn't, then this is your problem.

You did get 2 512MB sticks and not just one 1GB stick right?!?! Again, based on your old post, if your system maxxes out at 1GB and you are only using 1GB stick of RAM, then that may be the problem. Your PC might not be able to read a 1GB stick properly, only 2X512MB sticks.

Make sure the fan is actually turning (yes, really). Also make sure that the vent at the back is clear from obstructions and that there is no build up of dust, fluff, etc. (try vacuuming the fan when the PC is off). If all that fails, you probably need a new fan.

If you do all that and you still have a problem, then the fault lies elsewhere.

My computer did the exact same thing. It's not the fan. I had to reformat my hard drive and it no longer does it. However, every so often, it will do it again, and again, the only thing that helps is wiping the hard drive (this means you lose everything - I backed everything) and starting over.

At first we thought we had a virus of some sort. We didn't. I have a Dell by the way (I hate it - never get a Dell)

What else is new? Haters will continually make the Yanks scapegoats while they could blame their own communities vendors who positioned the money they make of their own wallet or for stupid initiatives( Pirates possession making a actuality teach in India in line with finding for Indian adult men who they'll practice to pitch for them) rather of doing each little thing they might to strengthen their communities. in addition they do no longer blame the gamers Union (who by ability of how many of their favourite gamers even from smaller industry communities are participants) are against imposing a gross sales Cap. The Union cares greater approximately making their gamers the main money achievable than to help the interest of Baseball & the communities that prefer help. What kills me is that followers that whinge approximately this are some(no longer all) Mets/ purple Sox followers who may be the final human beings complaining thinking they are in the precise 5 communities with the utmost payroll. As communities like the Mets & Cubs have shown this 300 and sixty 5 days is that obtaining extreme priced gamers does not assure you a championship so all this to me is hogwash. And judging by ability of the thumbs down on people who look after the Yanks by ability of infantile people who think of Yankee followers don't have a top to their opinion or don't have a top to disagree is between the justifications why this place has became to this variety of unhappy humorous tale now. P.S people who moan approximately this are an identical hypocrites who does no longer say a observe if their group became into in the Yankees footwear & all people who deny's that are liars.

Depends on the computer and the fan. Some computers have "smart" fans that adjust their speed to the temperature in the computer. I usually connect at least 3 or 4 fans to the power supply so that they run constantly. However, because of their number they run slowly and quietly. If in doubt replace the fan(s) and connect it/them to the power supplies fan cables instead of the motherboard.

If the fan is physically working, that is probably not your problem. Hold a match in front of the fan outlet. The moving air should make the smoke go in or out of the computer depending upon which fan it is.

a computer turning itself off is 9 out of 10 a motherboard problem. but before you think about digging inside your base unit check the power options of your computer first. is it turning itself off while you're using it or is it switching itself off when left alone. if the answer is while it's in use then it is definitely a hardware problem most probably a burnt capacitor on the motherboard. if the answer is while it is left alone then check your power options. good luck.

Clean the all the vents on your PC with a vacuum cleaner. you will be surprised at the ammount of dust that has congrated around, then see what happens. If your fan was faulty, it would generally make a noise.
Also, try disc cleanup, defrag, virus scan, spyware scan, etc Good luck...............
