Irish Americans dug canals, built railroads, and many other things in history.
As for today, you can't turn on a tv or watch a movie without seeing somebody of Irish descent. Marrion Morrison (John Wayne), Maureen O'Hara (who was born in Ireland), Judy Garland, Robert Redford, etc. are a few of the exapmles of Irish Americans.
If you are a member of a union, that is due in part to Mary Harris Jones, I have also heard plenty of references to JFK in the recent political activity here in the states. Not to mention that some of the people running are of Irish descent, not to mention some of the people yacking about it (Bill O'Reilly, Chris Matthews, etc.).
Additionally, nuclear physics is where it is today because Ernest Walton (born in Ireland) invented the partical accelerator. The modern X-ray was developed by Bernal (also born in Ireland). Astronomers now know of pulsars because of Irish-born Jocelyn Bell Burnell.

Why do they have to have done something for society? You're of Irish descent.. and..? So are millions of other people. Paddy's day and dying a river green are nothing to do with real Irishness. Paddy's day isn't even hugely celebrated in Ireland.

Irish immigrants in the late half of the 19th century helped build and establish industry in the East and fought in the Civil War. Other than that, probably not much outside of the Irish mob (lessors to the Italian mafia), St. Paddy's day, Guinness beer, and Lucky Charms. Irish people today prefer to stay in ireland since the country is doing well for itself now.

St Patrick's day is celebrated because he's the patron saint of Ireland, not because the Irish have done something for society. Anyway, the Irish people have done lots for society here in Ireland, at least!

Drinking and fighting help the economy by increasing the number of alcohol sales and the sale of bandages. Don't forget the extra training our EMTs and police get.
