Cape Town is incredible.

Rent a car and drive up the Garden Route (East Coast) towards Knysna. We just did that and it was the most amazing trip. The elephant park was brilliant. You get to feed and touch them for ages.

I would also recommend driving to Oudtshoorn from Knysna and going to the Safari park to see all the animals.

You will always be restricted by the money you have but things like food, bars, drinks, etc is the cheapest anywhere and at excellent quality too.

Beaches are clean and amazing and you can spend days just walking around, hiking up mountains and visiting beatiful gardens.

I can't recommend it enough.

South Africa is wonderful, we do have a high crime rate but if you are careful you will not run into any trouble. The garden route is beautiful, with towns like Knysna and Jeffery's bay are good quite holiday choices. Margate near Durban, is where the young South Africans go for Holiday. Which is another thing to remember, during December the coastal areas become flooded with Jo'burgers on holiday. So it could be better to head inland, and chill out at a wildlife lodge, the area is sparsely populated so do not expect wild parties. October to February is the warmest time but Durban can still be very warm during winter.

when entering SA, you are supposed to declare how much cash you have on you. I've been to SA every year for the last 8 years and never had anyone controling ... now be aware that it's not safe to carry to much money on you and that you can get cash almost everywhere with your debit card: just go to an ATM (you'll find them even in the smallest village and in the parks) and get what you need. you're sure to get a good exchange rate and you don't have to carry a lot of cash. besides, credit cards are widely accepted - in fact you only need cash to by fuel for your car (that is, if your driving yourself) and when you want to buy some souvenirs. so my advice would be to take only a minimum of cash and to get what you need several times a week form an ATM. enjoy your stay!

Stellenbosch. Close to Cape Town but quieter. University town. Close to beaches. Surrounded by vineyards (the wine's great!) and mountains. Last I've heard, the place with the most restaurants per capita in SA.
Enjoy.

Foo-she asked for S.A. not Australia~! Granted, Perth is nice, but we're talking about S.A. here!

Anywho...I'd recommend the Durban area, because Cape Town is pretty expensive! Umhlanga, I found, was a very nice place indeed...there are loads of hotels there and they are affordable! Umhlanga isn't far from Durban either!

For a romantic getaway on a less-generous budget, Cape Town is definitely the place - direct flights, a choice of hotels (visit Tripadvisor.com for ratings), plenty of night life and absolutely beautiful.

As regards weather, remember that the Cape Town summer is NOT in July/August, so if you're looking for a beach break at that time, you'll be very disappointed here!

In response to the crime issue raised above, I have lived in Cape Town for more than 18 years and had no crime against me. Take the precautions you would take in any large city and don't walk around loaded with jewellery and cameras.

To Johannesburg!! Nah I'm only joking!

South-Africa is known as wildlife and cultured land. Go to National Kruger park. There you will see the big five.
If you want to experience the Zoeloe(black culture) culture then go to Sabie.

Cape Town is also nice but its boring..... Only nice things to see there is Table Mountain and the sea.lol

Well its your choice! Good luck.
