I had an HSG during my laparoscopy, which is a procedure where the doctor puts a camera inside you to check out your organs. The HSG showed that my tubes were clear, but during the laparoscopy my OB found I had a mild case of endometriosis and removed it immediately. The very next month I conceived my daughter. When my daughter was a year, we started ttc again. I was on Clomid again to help me ovulate, which I was. After 5 months ttc, my OB sent me to a fertility specialist to see if there was something he was missing. The fertility specialist recommended doing another HSG. He said many women conceive with endometriosis, so that might not have been my problem ttc my daughter. And although my tubes were not blocked, he said that an HSG can be very therapeutic. He said he has had many patients that conceive quickly after getting an HSG. He only does them on Wednesdays, so he told me if/when I started my period, I would have the HSG the Wednesday following the start of my period. Given that, I'm sure you will be able to start ttc if you should ovulate a week after having the HSG. Fortunately, I didn't start my period that month because I ended up getting pregnant. I hope the HSG works for you and you conceive quickly. Best of luck.

What is a hysterosalpingogram?

A hysterosalpingogram is an important test that is part of the basic infertility evaluation.

The test is usually done in the radiology department of a hospital in which radiographic contrast (dye) is injected into the uterine cavity through the vagina and cervix. The uterine cavity fills with dye and if the fallopian tubes are open the dye will then fill the tubes and spill out into the abdominal cavity. In this way it can be determined whether the fallopian tubes are open or blocked and whether the blockage is located at the junction of the tube and the uterus (proximal) or whether it is at the end of the fallopian tube (distal). These two areas where the tube is most commonly blocked have different causes. Effective treatment for tubal factor infertility is available.

There are other things that potentially can be seen on a hysterosalpingogram other that whether the tubes are open or blocked. The uterine cavity is evaluated for the presence of polyps or fibroid tumors or scar tissue. The fallopian tubes are also examined for any defects within the tube or suggestion of a partial blockage.

I too have to have a HSG done because I just had to have and ectopic and right tube removed almost 3 weeks ago. It is just basically to see if the tubes are blocked causing infertilitly or ectopic pregnancies

I have had one done. It hurt. My cervix was closed. Just be prepared. It's very uncomfortable and your in an x-ray room. You will most likely bleed and cramp for a couple of days afterward. You should be able to have sex within the next week. I had open tubes and am now going through IVF. The test doesn't really mean that much. Good luck to you though!!!

I had it done. It can increase your chances for 6 or so cycles after the test. You can have sex 24 hours after the test if there is no bleeding and if there is bleeding you should wait 24 hours after the bleeding stops to have sex--this goes for taking a bath too, not showering.
