Colloquialisms: A colloquialism is an expression not used in formal speech or writing. Colloquialisms can include words (such as "gonna" or "grouty" or "uffda"), phrases (such as "ain't nothin'" and "dead as a doornail"), or sometimes even an entire aphorism ("There's more than one way to skin a cat"). Dictionaries often display colloquial words and phrases with the abbreviation colloq. Colloquialisms are often used primarily within a limited geographical area.

They aren't called the same things. Six of one, half a dozen of another is called an idiom. That is they both mean the same thing. I was born at night, but not last night and the so hungry.. thing- those are not idioms. Those are just old sayings as far as I know. Check out some other good ones on this site... http://www.newtontxnetwork.com/tour/oldsay/

I think the right word is 'anacdote'. Yes, I dug into my brain cells to come up with that, but that's the word, I believe.
