Yes, it is a security measure. Some websites/forums are spammed by automatic programs known as "bots". As programs (and bots) can't read graphical content, they wouldn't know what those boxes say, and thus won't be able to post spam.

It is a security feature to ensure that no automated form filling programs can enter the site. Those site usually contain some private information. The random number and letter combo box is used to deter people from using an automation tool to enter the site. These automated tools can do everything you do to the page. Some people just to be mean can autofill hundreds of thousands of entries automatically, their computer will just keep making entries on its own and signing up user after user. To prevent this they put in the random letter number box and ask a user to enter the letters and numbers seen. An automated tool usually cannot recognize the letters presented. And therefore cannot fill out that crucial final peice to finish the page. Although there are ways around the box it is still commonly used.

Yes, it's a security measure to keep people from using a computer to automatically access the website to place orders, register for something, etc. A computer will be unable to "see" the word found in the box and type it in, therefore unable to complete the transaction.

It has to do with security but I think it's mainly because of the format in which information is laid out on their site. This is to ensure that your PC is able to read text that will be included on the site. If you are unable to decipher the characters then you would not be able to read what's presented.

Hope this clears it up.
