First off this is an issue for South Carolina residents. But with low test scores and rough economy who cares about the flag, let's focus on what matters the most, the people. Let's argue about the flag when we have time to deal with such superficial issues.

Well here we go with another serious matter at hand! I personally think that the confederate flag should continue to fly over top any state house in the south regardless of what anybody says whether it be civil rights groups or whom ever,This flag has been around for centuries and will continue to be around for more centuries to come, I support what the flag stands for but what I don't support is the way certain groups of ppl use the flag for racism or whatever the case maybe, Many men and women as well during this period shed blood for this flag because they was fighting for what they thought was right, I don't see how or why anybody would want to take away from history that belongs to the south, If ever the Confederate Flag should fly no more then it will be a sad day in hstory for true southerners.Proud supporter of the Confederate Flag. Heritage not Hate.

No. It is about heritage, not 'slavery' as some like to paint it. I think the whole problem over the flag is entirely in the eye of the beholder, and subscribed to only by the terminally PC -- at the expense of losing a part of our heritage.

I had ancestors fighting on both sides of the war, and none of them owned slaves.

And to marksman, above, Lincoln didn't even come up with slavery as a rallying cry for the war until they were well into it. Go into the papers of the day. There are all sorts of letters making it clear they were trying to find a way to rally northerners against a divisive war.

It was kind of the 'WMD' of the 1860's.

It would be a shame to let them ruin a flag that was flow when the south fault for there Independence.Think about if Great Britain would have won and people were asking for the stars and stripes to be removed.

No. What people tend too ignore is that the Civil War was not solely fought on the issue of slavery. This was, of course, a large factor, but there were was more involved politically. State's rights and the limitations of the federal government were also a huge part of what led to the conflict. If people would research and actually attempt to learn something, rather than just spouting off their one-sided opinions, we would have far less deliberation over this issue and many others in society.

That is for the people of South Carolina to decide. The flag in this case is a non-violent protest by the state over the unlawful abuse of power by the Federal government. The Federal government has no legitimate power to force them to remove it.

Do the people who are mad about the state flags of many southern states really have any idea what the "Stars and Bars" flag was used for? Do they know that this flag was never flown over a southern capital? It was a BATTLE FLAG, the flag used by the Confederate Army. I doubt many people realize it.

It should not be taken down. The CSA flag is not synonymous with racism or ignorance, despite what people try to say. The vast majority of people who fought and died for Southern Independence were not slave owners. They are no less heroes and patriots than their counterparts in the North or their grandfathers who fought the British.

Keep the flag up.

It's funny how most people who say "it isn't a symbol of southern heritage" aren't actually from the south...
