I guess with friends we are able to gel emotionally at the same wavelength. There is no generation gap & they see us as a person & not as a relation who has to behave as per the family code of conduct.
With relations there are certain formalities to be done . Rules have to be followed whether you agree to it or not. But with friends u can always have a straight talk.
But somehow I feel in today's highly competitive, demanding & stressful lifestyle people are moving away from their own self & not just their friends/relatives .

I know from my own personal experience, my friends treated me a whole lot better than my own family. I now live 1 mile from my best friend and 3 hours away from my family. This has kept me sane and happy. I do visit my family and love the time I share with them, however they were not my friends and never will be. This is just something that happens. Some families are closer than others. My family put the "funk" in disfunctional. Thank you.

Family can be annoying when they know anything that isn't that great about you or your choices. Because they care. Friends give you there opinion if you ask them but you have control over who your Friends are and you have no control over family. A good friend will be like family in that they care and are not afraid to give there opinion when you screw up. I think that is anywhere you go. I don't know about you but my deepest secrets growing up were told to my best friends not my parents or siblings. And I live in a small village!

Relatives are know our weakness and utilise it when ever they need.It could be difficult to understand when they are misusing . But friends even they can know our weakness they adjust and do better help. For that one of the major reason keep distance the relations and move close to the friends.

With friends they can associate themselves for the present and can still maintain privacy.
With relatives they feel a little bit of uneasyness as the relatives are associated not only with the present but also with past as well as future.

You must have heard about this saying;
If your father is not rich, it’s your destiny. But if your father-in-law is not rich, that is your stupidity.
Same thing applies here, but in different context.
You can “choose” a person to be your friend, but you don’t have choice with your relatives.
But, there could be some relatives, who are your friends.
And, you like to be with them.

I assume that you mean emotional distance and not physical.
My friends are a part of my everyday life since I live by them, but my family lives farther away.
I keep my family in the dark about things in my life so that they don't worry and don't stress me out because of their worrying. My friends pretty much know about everything in my life anyway since they're always there.
I don't keep my family distant to hurt them, but I worry more about what they think of me so I guess that's another reason to keep things from them.

This is because friends are the ones you can choose but relatives you can not.

WE ARE BORN AND INHERIT RELATIVES. THE CLOSER WE ARE TO EACH OTHER THE MORE EXPECTATIONS WE HAVE. THESE EXPECTATIONS ARE THE CAUSE FOR US TO MOVE AWAY BECAUSE WE FEEL SUFFOCATED AND UNCOMFORTABLE. THE SAME IS TRUE FOR FRIENDS ALSO ALBEIT AFTER WE REACH A CERTAIN LEVEL OF INTIMACY WHEN THEY ALSO TRY TO CHANGE US.
